Duleep Trophy: Young batter Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s return to competitive cricket did not go as planned as he was dismissed for just eight runs while representing East Zone against North East Zone in the quarter-final in Bengaluru on Sunday, August 23. Suryavanshi hit two consecutive boundaries early in his short innings before a mistimed attacking shot brought his stay at the crease to an end.
The highly-rated youngster walked in with plenty of attention on him, but his innings lasted only six deliveries. Playing as East Zone’s vice-captain, Suryavanshi showed his aggressive intent almost immediately. In the second over, he found the boundary twice in succession against North East Zone pacer Bishwajit Konthoujam.
However, Konthoujam responded strongly and eventually removed the young batter with the final delivery of the over. The pacer bowled a back-of-a-length delivery outside the off stump, inviting Suryavanshi to play an attacking stroke. The batter went for the shot but failed to control it properly, sending the ball towards the fielder stationed in the gully.
The catch was taken safely, giving North East Zone an early breakthrough in the Duleep Trophy quarter-final. Suryavanshi appeared visibly disappointed as he walked back towards the dressing room after spending only a brief period at the crease.
A video of his dismissal has also attracted attention, with fans closely following the young batter’s performances after his rapid rise in Indian cricket.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi Makes History at a Young Age
Suryavanshi has already created a place for himself in Indian cricket history despite being at the beginning of his career. Before the Duleep Trophy assignment, he had represented Bihar in eight first-class matches and featured in 12 innings. His highest first-class score is 93, while his batting average has remained above 17.
The youngster made his international debut during India’s tour of England at the age of just 15. At 15 years and 99 days, he became the youngest player to make an international appearance for India, surpassing the long-standing record associated with Sachin Tendulkar.
His first international series, however, was a difficult one. Suryavanshi could not cross the 20-run mark in any of his three innings, while India eventually lost the series 1-4.
Zimbabwe Tour Proved to Be a Turning Point
Suryavanshi produced a much stronger performance during India’s tour of Zimbabwe. Across three innings, he scored 151 runs at an impressive average of 50.33 and a remarkable strike rate of 196.10. His campaign included two half-centuries, with his highest score being 81.
His performances were rewarded with the Player of the Series award, underlining his ability to make a strong impact when given an opportunity at the international level.
The young batter has also made an impact across six T20 matches, scoring 193 runs at an average of 32.16 and an outstanding strike rate of 189.21. He has two half-centuries in those appearances.

Duleep Trophy Gives Suryavanshi Another Opportunity
Although his eight-run dismissal against North East Zone was disappointing, the Duleep Trophy remains an important opportunity for Suryavanshi to gain valuable experience in domestic cricket. At such a young age, regular first-class cricket can play a major role in developing his technique, temperament and ability to handle different match situations.
His aggressive batting style has already attracted significant attention, but the Duleep Trophy provides him with a chance to work on the longer format of the game. After a brief stay at the crease in Bengaluru, the focus will now shift to his performances in the remainder of the tournament.
For Suryavanshi, the latest innings may have ended quickly, but his rapid rise and previous performances suggest that there will be plenty of attention on his next opportunity.
