Shapoor Zadran, one of the pioneering figures in Afghanistan’s rise in international cricket, has passed away at the age of 38 after battling a rare and serious medical condition. The former fast bowler had been receiving treatment in India for the past several months before his death. According to the Afghanistan Cricket Board, Shapoor Zadran had been undergoing treatment in a hospital in the Delhi-NCR region after being diagnosed with Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), a rare and life-threatening disorder that affects the body’s immune system.
HLH causes the immune system to become dangerously overactive, leading to widespread inflammation that can damage vital organs such as the liver, spleen, bone marrow, and lymph nodes. Although the condition is more commonly diagnosed in children, it can also occur in adults and often requires specialized medical care.
Reports indicate that Zadran first experienced health complications last October. Following medical advice in Afghanistan, he traveled to India for advanced treatment. While his condition initially showed signs of improvement and he was discharged from the hospital, the illness later returned, causing his health to deteriorate in recent weeks.
A Key Figure in Afghanistan’s Cricket Journey
Shapoor Zadran was among the players who helped transform Afghanistan from an emerging cricket nation into a respected international side. Known for his left-arm pace and aggressive bowling style, he represented Afghanistan during a crucial period in the team’s development between 2009 and 2020.
