Ben Stokes is preparing to return to competitive cricket just days after announcing his retirement from Test cricket, offering fans a fresh reason to celebrate. The former England captain is expected to make his comeback in domestic one-day cricket for Durham, marking a new chapter in his career after stepping away from international cricket.
Stokes, who had already retired from One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and T20 Internationals before calling time on his Test career earlier this month, is now ready to represent his childhood county in England’s domestic 50-over competition.
Ben Stokes to Play for Durham in One-Day Cup
The 35-year-old all-rounder is set to feature for Durham in the One-Day Cup on the same day the new season of The Hundred begins. His return comes after an emotional period that saw him announce his retirement during England’s third Test against New Zealand.
Although his international career has come to an end, Stokes had previously committed to playing for Durham in the domestic competition before officially announcing his retirement from England duties. His return will also mark his first domestic 50-over appearance for Durham in over a decade.
Retirement Followed a Difficult End to International Career
Stokes’ decision to retire from Test cricket came after a challenging phase in his career. England suffered a home Test series defeat against New Zealand, and the experienced all-rounder also found himself at the center of off-field attention following a nightclub incident that kept him out of the second Test of the series while an investigation was underway.
During that break from the England squad, Stokes returned to county cricket and represented Durham in the County Championship against Northamptonshire. That brief return to domestic cricket appears to have reignited his passion for the game.
Stokes Says He Has Found Fresh Motivation
Speaking to BBC Sport, Stokes explained that his time back with Durham helped him reconnect with his love for cricket.
He said returning to Durham while missing the second Test gave him renewed energy and excitement for the game. Although he admitted that maintaining those feelings consistently had been difficult, he expressed confidence that retiring from international cricket was the right decision. Stokes also said he is looking forward to playing once again for the club where his cricket journey began.
His comments suggest that stepping away from the demands of international cricket has allowed him to focus on enjoying the sport in a different environment.
First Domestic 50-Over Match for Durham in 12 Years
Stokes has not played 50-over cricket since England’s campaign at the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup. His upcoming appearance for Durham will therefore be a significant milestone, both personally and professionally.
The match is expected to be his first domestic one-day fixture for Durham in 12 years. His previous 50-over match for the county came in the 2014 One-Day Cup final against Warwickshire, a game Durham went on to win.
Since then, Stokes has spent most of his career representing England across all formats while occasionally featuring in domestic competitions when international commitments allowed.

A New Phase After a Decorated England Career
Throughout his international career, Ben Stokes established himself as one of England’s greatest all-rounders. He captained the Test side for an extended period and played key roles in some of the country’s most memorable victories. His aggressive batting, match-winning spells with the ball, and remarkable ability to perform under pressure made him one of the defining cricketers of his generation.
While his international retirement marked the end of an era, his decision to continue playing county cricket ensures that supporters will still get the opportunity to watch him in action.
For Durham, the return of one of their most famous products is a major boost. Beyond strengthening the team’s chances in the One-Day Cup, Stokes’ presence is expected to attract significant attention and provide valuable experience to younger players in the squad.
Although his days in England colours are over, Ben Stokes is clearly not finished with cricket. His domestic comeback represents a fresh beginning, allowing one of the modern game’s most influential all-rounders to continue contributing to the sport while embracing a less demanding stage of his career.
