Ali Usman produced a memorable spell on the second day of the first Test between England and Pakistan at Headingley, taking five wickets and becoming the first overseas spinner in 53 years to claim a five-wicket haul at the famous Leeds venue. Despite his impressive performance, England finished the day firmly in control after reaching 366 for 8, giving them a 195-run lead over Pakistan.
The second day was heavily affected by rain, with only 57 overs possible. Play started late, but England made the most of the available time after resuming their innings at 112 for 2.
Ali Usman Makes Headingley History
Ali Usman became the first visiting spinner since Australia’s Ashley Mallett in 1972 to take five wickets in a Test innings at Headingley. Mallett had achieved the feat during the Ashes more than five decades ago.
For Usman, the achievement also marked his first five-wicket haul in Test cricket. His wickets came at important stages of England’s innings and helped Pakistan prevent the hosts from building an even bigger advantage.
The Pakistan spinner saved his best work for the final part of the day, taking three wickets during the last half-hour of play. He dismissed Harry Brook, Gus Atkinson and Ollie Robinson, with Robinson becoming the wicket that completed his five-wicket haul.
Four England Batters Score Half-Centuries
England’s batting line-up once again showed its strength despite the interruptions caused by rain. Joe Root continued his innings and scored 66, while Jordan Cox made 73. The pair put together a crucial 150-run partnership for the third wicket, putting England in a strong position.
Dan Lawrence then contributed 51 runs, while Harry Brook scored 91. Lawrence and Brook added 120 runs for the fifth wicket, keeping England comfortably ahead of Pakistan.
Their contributions meant that four England batters reached fifty during the day, putting considerable pressure on the Pakistani bowling attack.
Harry Brook Misses Another Headingley Century
Harry Brook came painfully close to another century at his home venue. The England batter scored 91 runs from 93 balls but was eventually dismissed by Ali Usman.
It was the second consecutive Headingley Test in which Brook missed out on a century after getting very close. During England’s Test against India at the same venue last year, Brook had been dismissed for 99.
This time, he again fell short of three figures, with Ali Usman producing the delivery that ended his impressive innings.
England Hold a Strong Advantage
England ended the second day on 366 for 8, having moved 195 runs ahead of Pakistan’s first-innings total of 171. With two wickets still remaining, the hosts have an opportunity to extend their lead further when play resumes.
Rain remains an important factor in the match, but England are clearly in the stronger position after two days. Pakistan’s immediate priority on the third day will be to take England’s remaining wickets as quickly as possible.
The visitors will then need a much stronger batting performance in their second innings. With England already holding a substantial lead, Pakistan face the challenge of surviving the remainder of the Test while trying to keep their hopes of a result alive.
For Ali Usman, however, the second day at Headingley will remain a significant personal milestone. His five-wicket haul not only gave Pakistan a crucial boost but also placed his name alongside a rare group of overseas spinners who have achieved the feat at one of England’s most historic Test grounds.
