Brendan Taylor has created history in men’s ODI cricket by surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the longest international one-day career. The legendary Zimbabwe batter achieved the milestone when he walked out for Zimbabwe in the first ODI against Australia at Harare Sports Club on Tuesday.
With his appearance in the match, Taylor’s ODI career reached 22 years and 146 days, moving him ahead of Tendulkar’s long-standing record. The former India batting great’s ODI career lasted 22 years and 91 days, from 1989 to 2012.

Taylor made his ODI debut for Zimbabwe in 2004 and has had an international career filled with remarkable achievements as well as several unexpected turns. His latest appearance against Australia has now placed his name at the top of the list for the longest men’s ODI career.
The achievement comes after an extraordinary return to international cricket. Taylor stepped away from international cricket in 2021, but later made his comeback in 2025 following a suspension imposed by the International Cricket Council (ICC).
Before returning to the international stage, Taylor had taken a break from international cricket in 2021. His suspension lasted three and a half years, making his eventual return one of the most unusual chapters of his long cricketing journey.
Taylor Closing in on Andy Flower’s Zimbabwe Record
Brendan Taylor is also among Zimbabwe’s leading run-scorers in international cricket. Before the ODI series against Australia, he had accumulated 6,704 runs in 205 innings.
He is now within touching distance of another major Zimbabwean batting record held by Andy Flower. Flower scored 6,786 runs in 208 innings, meaning Taylor needs only 82 more runs to move closer to Flower’s mark.
Taylor has represented Zimbabwe across all three formats and has also captained the national side in Test, ODI and T20 cricket. One of the standout periods of his career came during the 2015 ODI World Cup, where he was Zimbabwe’s leading performer.
During that tournament, Taylor scored two centuries, including an impressive hundred against India. His performances established him as one of the most important batters in Zimbabwean cricket during that era.
Brendan Taylor’s Kolpak Deal and Return to Zimbabwe
Taylor’s international career has not followed a straightforward path. After Zimbabwe’s 2015 World Cup campaign, he decided to leave international cricket and signed a three-year Kolpak agreement with English county side Nottinghamshire.
The move meant Taylor stepped away from Zimbabwe’s international setup for a period. However, after his county contract came to an end, he eventually returned to Zimbabwe cricket and became part of the national setup once again.
His return marked another important stage in a career that had already included major performances, leadership responsibilities and international recognition.
Taylor’s Explosive Match-Fixing Revelation
One of the most controversial episodes of Taylor’s career emerged after he announced his retirement from international cricket in 2021.
Taylor later revealed that he had been approached by individuals in 2019 in connection with an alleged attempt to fix matches. According to his account, he was offered cocaine during the incident and was subsequently subjected to blackmail.
The revelations led to an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the approach and Taylor’s handling of the matter.
Brendan Taylor Suspended for Three and a Half Years
Taylor was ultimately suspended for three and a half years after being found to have delayed reporting the approach to the ICC. The suspension temporarily brought an end to his international career and left his future in professional cricket uncertain.
At the time, Taylor was considering a possible future in coaching rather than returning to international cricket as a player.
However, Zimbabwe Cricket managing director Givemore Makoni played an important role in persuading him to reconsider. Taylor was encouraged to return to international cricket with the 2027 ODI World Cup in mind.
