Indian Premier League 2026: RCB Storm Into Final After Crushing Gujarat Titans by 92 Runs

The race to the Indian Premier League 2026 title took a dramatic turn as Royal Challengers Bengaluru produced one of the most dominant playoff performances in tournament history to book their place in the final. Bengaluru outclassed Gujarat Titans by a massive 92-run margin in Qualifier 1, sending a strong message to the rest of the competition ahead of the championship clash.

Playing under pressure in a high-stakes playoff encounter, RCB delivered an almost complete performance with both bat and ball. Led by a sensational unbeaten innings from captain Rajat Patidar, Bengaluru posted a record-breaking total of 254 for 5 in 20 overs before bowling Gujarat out for just 162.

While the defeat was a heavy setback for Gujarat Titans, their campaign is still alive. Under the IPL playoff format, the losing side in Qualifier 1 gets another opportunity to reach the final through Qualifier 2.

Rajat Patidar Leads RCB’s Batting Masterclass

RCB’s innings revolved around an extraordinary knock from skipper Rajat Patidar, who played one of the finest playoff innings seen in recent Indian Premier League seasons. Patidar remained unbeaten on 93 from only 33 deliveries, smashing five boundaries and nine sixes in a brutal display of power-hitting.

Coming in after a quick start from the openers, Patidar completely shifted the momentum in Bengaluru’s favor. Gujarat’s bowlers struggled to control his attacking approach as he dominated both pace and spin with fearless strokeplay.

Patidar’s innings was particularly impressive because of the match situation. Rather than slowing down after reaching his half-century, he accelerated further in the death overs and ensured RCB crossed the 250-run mark-a total that eventually proved far beyond Gujarat’s reach.

His leadership has also become one of the biggest positives for Bengaluru this season. Throughout IPL 2026, Patidar has handled pressure situations calmly, and this innings further strengthened his growing reputation as a dependable captain and match-winner.

Strong Contributions Across the Batting Order

While Patidar stole the spotlight, Bengaluru also received valuable contributions from several other batters.

Opener Venkatesh Iyer provided early momentum by scoring 19 runs from just seven balls. His aggressive intent during the powerplay helped RCB establish attacking momentum immediately.

Virat Kohli once again played an important supporting role. The veteran batter scored 43 off 25 balls, including five fours and one six. Kohli mixed experience with controlled aggression and built a solid partnership that allowed Patidar to attack freely from the other end.

Devdutt Padikkal added fluency in the middle overs with a quick 30 off 19 deliveries. His ability to rotate strike and find boundaries regularly prevented Gujarat from slowing the scoring rate.

Krunal Pandya then added further damage late in the innings. The all-rounder scored 43 from 28 balls and targeted Gujarat’s bowlers during the final overs with a combination of clean hitting and smart placement.

Jitesh Sharma also provided an explosive finishing touch with an unbeaten 15 from just five balls.

The combined effort highlighted the batting depth Bengaluru have developed this season. Unlike previous campaigns where RCB often relied heavily on one or two players, this year’s lineup has consistently produced collective performances.

Gujarat Bowlers Struggle Under Pressure

Gujarat Titans entered the match with one of the stronger bowling attacks in the tournament, but they failed to contain Bengaluru’s relentless assault.

Jason Holder was among the few bowlers who managed to make some impact, finishing with two wickets while conceding 39 runs in four overs. Kagiso Rabada also picked up two wickets but leaked 54 runs.

Prasidh Krishna claimed one wicket but struggled with consistency and ended with expensive figures. Mohammed Siraj, Rashid Khan, and Kulwant Khejroliya were unable to apply sustained pressure as RCB’s batters continued scoring freely throughout the innings.

One of the biggest concerns for Gujarat was the lack of control during the middle overs. Rashid Khan, usually one of the most reliable spinners in the Indian Premier League, could not create breakthroughs or slow the scoring rate effectively.

The Titans’ bowling unit has been a major reason behind their success in recent seasons, but this performance exposed weaknesses when defending against an aggressive batting lineup on a good surface.

Gujarat Titans Collapse During Chase

Chasing a daunting target of 255, Gujarat needed a strong start but quickly lost momentum after early wickets.

Jos Buttler looked dangerous during his brief stay at the crease, smashing 29 runs from just 11 balls with a series of attacking strokes. However, once Buttler departed, Gujarat’s innings began to fall apart.

Sai Sudharsan scored 14, while captain Shubman Gill endured a disappointing outing with only two runs from seven balls. Washington Sundar, Nishant Sindhu, Rashid Khan, and Jason Holder also failed to make meaningful contributions.

The required run rate kept climbing, forcing Gujarat’s batters into risky shots. Bengaluru’s bowlers capitalized brilliantly by maintaining disciplined lines and taking wickets at regular intervals.

Eventually, Gujarat were bowled out for 162, ending a difficult evening for the Titans.

Jacob Duffy Headlines Bengaluru Bowling Effort

RCB’s bowling attack complemented the batting display perfectly.

Jacob Duffy emerged as the standout performer with three crucial wickets. The New Zealand pacer consistently troubled Gujarat’s batters with sharp pace and disciplined bowling.

Young fast bowler Rasikh Salam impressed with two important wickets and continued his rise as one of the emerging talents of the season.

Experienced seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar used his control and variations effectively to claim two wickets, while Josh Hazlewood and Krunal Pandya chipped in with one wicket each.

What stood out most was Bengaluru’s ability to remain aggressive despite defending a huge total. Rather than becoming defensive, RCB attacked Gujarat’s batting lineup from the beginning and never allowed partnerships to settle.

Bengaluru Register Highest Playoff Total in IPL History

RCB’s total of 254 for 5 created a new Indian Premier League playoff record.

The previous highest playoff totals in IPL history included:

254/5 – RCB vs GT, Dharamshala, 2026
233/3 – Gujarat Titans vs Mumbai Indians, Ahmedabad, 2023
228/5 – Mumbai Indians vs Gujarat Titans, New Chandigarh, 2025
226/6 – Punjab Kings vs Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai, 2014
222/5 – Chennai Super Kings vs Delhi Capitals, Chennai, 2012

The record reflects the evolution of T20 batting in recent years, where teams are increasingly pushing beyond traditional scoring benchmarks.

However, scoring 254 in a playoff match-where pressure is significantly higher-makes Bengaluru’s achievement even more remarkable.

Virat Kohli Creates Another IPL Milestone

The match also marked another historic achievement for Virat Kohli.

By appearing in his 282nd IPL game, Kohli became the player with the most matches in Indian Premier League history. The Bengaluru star moved ahead of former Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma on the all-time appearances list.

Since making his IPL debut in 2008, Kohli has become one of the defining figures of the league. Across his career, he has scored more than 9,200 runs at an average above 40 and has registered multiple centuries.

His longevity and consistency continue to set benchmarks in franchise cricket. Even in IPL 2026, Kohli remains a key figure for Bengaluru both as a batter and senior leader inside the dressing room.

The updated all-time IPL appearances list now places Kohli at the top, followed by Rohit Sharma and former Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni.

Gujarat Still Have One More Chance

Despite the heavy defeat, Gujarat Titans are not yet eliminated from the tournament.

According to the IPL playoff structure, the losing side in Qualifier 1 advances to Qualifier 2, where they receive another opportunity to reach the final.

Gujarat will now face the winner of the Eliminator match between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals. The winner of that contest will meet Gujarat in Qualifier 2 on May 29.

This format rewards teams that perform consistently during the league stage, and Gujarat still have a realistic path to the final if they can recover quickly from this setback.

However, the Titans will need significant improvement, especially in bowling execution and middle-order stability.

Bengaluru Eye Maiden IPL Glory

For Royal Challengers Bengaluru, the victory represents another major step toward achieving a long-awaited dream.

Despite being one of the most popular franchises in the Indian Premier League, RCB have historically struggled to convert strong seasons into titles. Over the years, the team has reached finals multiple times but failed to lift the trophy.

This season, though, Bengaluru appear more balanced than ever. Their batting lineup has depth, their bowling attack has delivered in key moments, and the leadership group looks confident under pressure.

The team will now head to the IPL 2026 final scheduled for May 31 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

With form, momentum, and confidence on their side, Bengaluru will believe this could finally be the year they end their title drought.
