Vaibhav Sooryavanshi may not have made a major impact with the bat in East Zone’s Duleep Trophy quarter-final, but the young all-rounder made his presence felt with the ball. The teenager picked up two wickets in just four deliveries and later shared an interesting story about how Ishan Kishan was initially hesitant to give him the ball.
The incident was discussed by Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in a video shared by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Speaking about his unexpected bowling contribution, Vaibhav revealed that East Zone vice-captain Ishan Kishan was not fully convinced about using him as a bowler.
According to Vaibhav, Ishan believed that giving him the ball could be a risk because he did not know that the youngster could be a genuine wicket-taker.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Opens Up About His Bowling
Talking about the experience, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi said that bowling is always enjoyable for a batter, just as batting can be exciting for a bowler. He explained that the situation in the match gave him an opportunity to contribute with the ball.
The opposition was not losing wickets for a while, so Vaibhav was asked to bowl a couple of overs. However, Ishan Kishan apparently felt that he was taking a chance by handing the ball to the youngster.
Vaibhav jokingly recalled that Ishan did not know he was a “wicket-taker” and was initially reluctant to trust him with the ball.
The youngster, however, made the most of the opportunity and quickly changed the situation with two important wickets.
Two Wickets Came in Just Four Balls
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi finished with two wickets, with both dismissals coming in a short spell.
His first wicket was that of Kishna Lingdoh. Vaibhav delivered a full-length ball, and Lingdoh stepped forward looking to play an attacking shot. However, he failed to make proper contact with the delivery and ended up being caught.
Vaibhav needed only three more deliveries to claim his second wicket. This time, he bowled a faster delivery to Imliwati Lemtur. The batter could not survive the challenge, with wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan completing the catch behind the stumps.
The two wickets in four balls gave Vaibhav a memorable contribution despite his relatively limited bowling opportunity.
“Even If I Took Five Wickets, I Would Get Only Three Overs”
Vaibhav also explained his mindset when he was handed the ball. He knew that he was unlikely to receive a long bowling spell, so his focus was simply on making the most of whatever opportunity came his way.
He said his thinking was that even if he somehow managed to take five wickets, he would probably still be given only around three overs. Therefore, his aim was to bowl as well as possible during those few overs and finish his spell strongly.
For Vaibhav, the bowling performance was especially satisfying because things had not gone according to plan with the bat. Contributing with the ball allowed him to make an impact for East Zone and enjoy the match in a different way.
The performance also highlighted another side of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who is widely known for his batting ability but showed that he can provide his team with an additional option when required. His quick double strike in the Duleep Trophy quarter-final proved that the youngster can make an impact even when he is not having his best outing with the bat.
