Madan Lal has strongly criticised the ongoing cricketing relationship between India and Pakistan following the latest controversy surrounding the Asia Cup trophy presentation ceremony. The former India cricketer and 1983 World Cup winner has taken a firm position, saying that if such incidents continue to occur whenever the two countries meet, India should consider stopping cricket matches against Pakistan altogether.
The latest controversy has once again raised questions about the future of India-Pakistan cricket ties. Matches between the two neighbouring countries have often attracted attention not only because of the intense rivalry on the field but also because of issues involving politics and official ceremonies.
Indian Team Stayed Away From Trophy Presentation
The controversy emerged during the Asia Cup trophy presentation ceremony, where Asian Cricket Council (ACC) president Mohsin Naqvi was at the centre of the dispute. The Indian team reportedly chose not to participate in the presentation ceremony in the manner normally expected after the tournament.
Senior Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officials, including Rajiv Shukla, were present at the venue. However, the Indian players did not accept the trophy or medals from Naqvi.

Madan Lal Expresses Anger on Social Media
Reacting to the incident, Madan Lal voiced his disappointment on social media. The former India all-rounder questioned why similar controversies continue to surround matches and tournaments involving Pakistan.
Madan Lal said that the same situation appears to be repeating itself. In his view, if India has to face such circumstances repeatedly, the country should not play Pakistan in tournaments.
At the same time, he acknowledged that the final decision regarding India’s participation and cricketing policy rests with the BCCI and its governing authorities.
His comments reflect the frustration expressed by several former cricketers and fans whenever cricket between India and Pakistan becomes entangled with matters outside the sport.
Madan Lal Had Raised Similar Concerns Earlier
This is not the first time Madan Lal has spoken strongly about a controversy involving India, Pakistan and Mohsin Naqvi.
A similar situation arose during the 2025 Asia Cup. India, led by Suryakumar Yadav, defeated Pakistan and went on to win the title. However, the Indian players declined to receive the trophy from Naqvi.
Madan Lal had also reacted to that episode at the time. He argued that if the dispute could not be resolved, another person should have been chosen to present the trophy to the winning Indian team.
According to Madan Lal’s view, the trophy presentation should remain a moment of celebration for the players and supporters. After winning a major tournament, the focus should be on the achievement, the team’s hard work and the joy of the fans rather than political tensions or disagreements between the two sides.
