IPL 2027 could begin a week earlier than usual, with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) considering changes to the tournament schedule in response to rising temperatures and increasing weather-related disruptions during the latter stages of the competition.
BCCI Secretary Devojit Saikia has indicated that the board is exploring a revised window for the next edition of the Indian Premier League, with the tournament potentially running from March 10 to May 15, 2027. The move is aimed at reducing the impact of extreme summer conditions and pre-monsoon rainfall, which have increasingly affected matches in recent seasons.
BCCI Evaluating New Schedule for IPL 2027
Traditionally, the IPL begins in the final week of March and continues until late May. However, according to Saikia, the weather conditions during the second half of May have become a growing concern for both players and spectators.
Many parts of India experience intense heat during this period, while several regions also begin receiving pre-monsoon showers. These conditions can create challenges for match scheduling, player performance, and fan attendance.
As a result, the BCCI is assessing the feasibility of shifting the tournament forward by approximately one week. The proposal remains under discussion between board officials and the IPL Governing Council.
No Increase in Number of Matches
Despite earlier discussions about expanding the IPL schedule, the league is not expected to increase its total number of matches in 2027.
There had been plans in previous years to eventually expand the competition from 74 matches to 94 matches, allowing teams to face each other more frequently during the league stage. However, Saikia clarified that the packed international cricket calendar leaves little room for such an expansion at present.
With international commitments involving national teams throughout the year, finding additional dates for a longer IPL season has become increasingly difficult. As a result, the tournament is likely to retain its existing format and match count for the foreseeable future.
BCCI Tasked Officials With Finding a Suitable Window
The BCCI has reportedly asked senior officials to explore scheduling options that would allow the tournament to start earlier without significantly affecting other domestic and international competitions.
General Manager of Cricket Development, AB Kuruvilla, has been tasked with identifying a suitable window for the revised IPL schedule. Discussions are ongoing to ensure that any changes align with the broader cricket calendar and operational requirements.
The board is expected to consult stakeholders before finalizing the dates for IPL 2027.
Domestic Cricket Calendar May See Adjustments
Starting the IPL in early March could require modifications to India’s domestic cricket season.
According to BCCI officials, efforts are being made to ensure that domestic tournaments conclude by around March 10, creating a clear transition into the IPL season. This would allow franchises, broadcasters, venues, and players adequate preparation time before the tournament begins.
Any adjustments to the domestic calendar would need careful planning to avoid disrupting existing competitions and player commitments.

Weather Played a Major Role During IPL 2026
Weather interruptions during IPL 2026 highlighted the challenges of hosting matches late in the summer season.
Several fixtures were affected by rain, including one match that had to be abandoned entirely. Other games were shortened after delayed starts, while multiple fixtures experienced temporary interruptions before full play could resume.
One of the most notable incidents occurred at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens, where the match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings was called off because of persistent rain and an unplayable outfield. Both teams were forced to share points after play could not continue.
In another rain-affected encounter in Guwahati, the match between Rajasthan Royals and Mumbai Indians was reduced to an 11-over contest following a lengthy delay. Rajasthan eventually secured victory in the shortened game.
Later in the season, the clash between Lucknow Super Giants and Royal Challengers Bengaluru was also impacted by weather conditions, leading officials to reduce the match to 19 overs per side.
Focus on Better Playing Conditions
The proposed scheduling change reflects the BCCI’s effort to provide more consistent playing conditions and reduce the risk of weather-related interruptions. By moving the tournament slightly earlier, organizers hope to minimize disruptions caused by extreme heat and pre-monsoon rainfall while maintaining the competitive quality of the league.
Although the final dates have yet to be confirmed, IPL 2027 is shaping up to be one of the earliest-starting editions of the tournament in recent years, signaling a proactive approach by cricket administrators to adapt to changing weather patterns and a demanding global cricket calendar.
