Australia CEO Todd Greenberg has suggested that the idea of staging a future Test match between Australia and England in India should not be ruled out, highlighting India’s growing importance as a global cricket market. While clarifying that there are no immediate plans for such a fixture, he said Cricket Australia remains open to exploring new opportunities with its international partners.
Speaking on the BBC’s Stumped podcast, Greenberg said the cricketing landscape continues to evolve, and administrators should remain flexible when considering new ways to grow the sport. However, he acknowledged that the already packed international calendar remains one of the biggest obstacles to introducing additional marquee events.

He explained that Cricket Australia enjoys strong working relationships with both the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), making future collaborations possible if scheduling challenges can be overcome.
Although discussions have not progressed into formal planning, Greenberg said the possibility of hosting a high-profile Australia-England Test in India could be explored in the years ahead.
Busy International Calendar Remains the Biggest Challenge
Despite expressing optimism about future opportunities, Greenberg admitted that fitting another major Test series into the international schedule would be extremely difficult.
International cricket already features bilateral series, ICC tournaments, domestic T20 leagues, and franchise competitions across multiple countries. According to Greenberg, the sport has reached a point where demand for matches exceeds the available calendar.
He noted that there are only 365 days in a year, while cricket boards continue to seek more events and content for fans and broadcasters. Expanding the calendar further without affecting player workload remains a complex challenge for administrators worldwide.

Greenberg also emphasized that Test cricket remains in a healthy position among Australia, England, and India. Rivalries involving these three nations continue to attract large television audiences, packed stadiums, and strong commercial interest.
Series such as the Ashes and India-Australia contests are widely regarded as the sport’s biggest attractions. Cricket Australia believes maintaining the strength of these traditional rivalries is essential for the long-term future of the longest format.

Big Bash League to Begin in Chennai This December
As part of its efforts to expand cricket’s reach, Cricket Australia is set to launch this season’s Big Bash League (BBL) with a special opening event in India.
The opening fixture is scheduled to take place at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium, where the Melbourne Renegades will face the Perth Scorchers. The event marks the first time a BBL opening match will be held in India, reflecting Cricket Australia’s interest in strengthening its connection with Indian fans.
The move has also fueled speculation that more exhibition matches or special international events could eventually be staged in India, including a possible Australia-England Test in the future.
India Series Continue to Drive ECB Revenue
The commercial importance of India has also been highlighted in the England and Wales Cricket Board’s latest financial report.
According to the report, series involving India generate some of the ECB’s highest revenues through broadcasting rights, sponsorships, and commercial partnerships. The board acknowledged that its financial performance depends heavily on marquee series featuring India because of their global television audience and significant market value.
The report also noted that despite hosting both the men’s and women’s Ashes in 2027, the ECB expects financial pressures during that period, underlining the economic importance of high-profile international contests.
Special Pink-Ball Test Planned at the MCG in 2027
Before the next Ashes series begins in England in 2027, Australia and England are scheduled to meet in a standalone commemorative Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
The day-night match, to be played with a pink ball, will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the first-ever Test match between the two nations. It will be held in March 2027 and will not count as part of the Ashes series.
The historic fixture is expected to be one of the landmark events on the international cricket calendar, celebrating one of the sport’s greatest rivalries while showcasing the continued popularity of Test cricket.
