Babar Azam has been reappointed as Pakistan’s Test captain, marking his return to the leadership role nearly three years after stepping down. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed the decision on Sunday while announcing the squad for the upcoming two-match Test series against the West Indies.
The leadership change comes after Pakistan’s disappointing run in the longest format under Shan Masood, whose tenure was overshadowed by a string of poor team results despite his own respectable performances with the bat.
PCB Makes Leadership Change Following Test Struggles
The PCB decided to hand the captaincy back to Babar Azam after reviewing the team’s recent performances. Pakistan has struggled to produce consistent results in Test cricket, leading to increased pressure on the team management to make changes before the upcoming international assignments.
PCB High Performance Director Aaqib Javed explained that the decision was based on the team’s inability to convert promising positions into victories.
According to Javed, Pakistan repeatedly failed to finish matches despite creating winning opportunities. He also suggested that stronger on-field leadership was needed, emphasizing that a Test captain’s responsibilities extend well beyond the toss. Tactical decisions such as field placements, the use of the Decision Review System (DRS), and guiding the team through crucial moments are all key aspects of the role.
Shan Masood Retains Place in Pakistan Test Squad
Although Shan Masood has been removed as captain, he remains part of Pakistan’s Test squad. The PCB made it clear that the leadership change was not a reflection of his individual batting performances.
Masood enjoyed one of the most productive phases of his batting career while leading the national side. During his captaincy stint, he scored two Test centuries and seven half-centuries, with his batting average improving significantly compared to earlier years.
However, the selectors concluded that the team’s results did not match the expectations placed on the captain.
Pakistan Endured Historic Losing Run Under Masood
Pakistan’s recent record in Test cricket played a major role in the decision. Under Shan Masood’s captaincy, the team lost its last seven consecutive Test matches, matching one of the longest losing streaks in Pakistan’s Test history.
Masood captained Pakistan in 16 Test matches, with the team suffering defeat in 12 of them. The record is one of the toughest starts by any Pakistan Test captain and places him among the least successful leaders in terms of results during the opening phase of a captaincy.
The PCB hopes that a change in leadership will help restore confidence as Pakistan prepares for a challenging international schedule.

Babar Azam Begins Second Spell as Test Captain
This will be Babar Azam’s second stint as Pakistan’s Test captain. During his previous tenure, he led the national side in 20 Test matches and guided Pakistan to 10 victories.
His first spell included several notable achievements. Pakistan secured a 2-0 home Test series victory over South Africa and also won away Test series in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Those successes established Babar as one of Pakistan’s most successful modern-day captains in the format.
However, his captaincy also included difficult moments, most notably Pakistan’s historic 3-0 home Test series defeat against England, which remains one of the team’s most disappointing results in recent years.
West Indies Series Marks First Assignment
Babar Azam‘s return as captain will begin with Pakistan’s two-match Test series against the West Indies later this month.
The opening Test is scheduled to start on July 25 in Tarouba, while the second Test will begin on August 2 in Port of Spain. Following the Caribbean tour, Pakistan is set to travel to England for another important Test assignment.
The upcoming series offers Pakistan an opportunity to reset after a difficult period in Test cricket. With Babar Azam back in charge and several experienced players available, the team will aim to improve its performances and rebuild momentum ahead of a demanding international season.
Cricket fans will closely watch how Babar Azam handles his second opportunity as Test captain and whether the leadership change can help Pakistan return to winning ways in the red-ball format.
