The Devdutt Padikkal Century Record has become one of the notable talking points in Indian cricket after the left-handed batter produced a memorable hundred against Sri Lanka. With his century against Sri Lanka, Padikkal became the sixth Indian batter in the last 30 years to achieve the feat. His name now sits alongside some of the most respected No. 3 batters in Indian Test cricket.
Padikkal Completed His Century in 134 Balls
Padikkal reached his hundred from 134 deliveries during India’s first innings. It was a landmark moment in his Test career, as the century marked his first hundred in Test cricket as well as his first Test century on Sri Lankan soil.
By the end of the opening day’s play, Padikkal remained unbeaten on 131 runs from 178 balls. His innings included 12 fours and one six, underlining both his control and attacking ability.
His knock also played a major role in India’s strong position at the close of play. India finished the day at 288 for two, with Padikkal making a substantial contribution to the team’s total.
Strong Partnership With KL Rahul
Padikkal also formed an important partnership with KL Rahul during the innings. The pair added 150 runs for the third wicket, providing India with the stability it needed after losing early wickets.
The partnership allowed Padikkal to settle into his innings and gradually build his score. Rahul’s experience at the other end also helped India maintain control during an important phase of the Test.

Padikkal Matches the Record of Five Left-Handed Indian Batters
Padikkal’s century at No. 3 also saw him match the achievement of five other left-handed Indian batters who have scored Test centuries from that position.
The group includes Salim Durani, Bapu Nadkarni, Ajit Wadekar, Eknath Solkar and Surinder Amarnath. Padikkal’s name is now part of this select group of left-handed Indian batters who have reached three figures while occupying the No. 3 position in Test cricket.
However, Vinod Kambli remains the leading Indian left-handed batter for centuries at No. 3, with four hundreds to his name. Sourav Ganguly follows him with three centuries from the same position.
A Special Milestone in Padikkal’s Test Career
For Padikkal, the century was more than just a personal milestone. It came on one of the most significant days on India’s calendar and against Sri Lanka in a Test match where India needed strong contributions from its middle order.
The performance demonstrated Padikkal’s ability to handle the demands of Test cricket and bat for a long period in challenging overseas conditions. His unbeaten 131 also gave India a strong platform as the Test progressed.
