India vs Sri Lanka 1st Test: India produced a commanding performance in Galle to defeat Sri Lanka by 165 runs in the first Test of the two-match series. Chasing a target of 372 runs, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 206 in 77.4 overs on the fifth day, allowing India to take a 1-0 lead in the series.
The victory was built around a strong bowling display from India, with Manav Suthar emerging as the standout performer. The left-arm spinner played a major role in the win, claiming five wickets in Sri Lanka’s second innings after already taking four wickets in the first innings.
India vs Sri Lanka 1st Test: Manav Suthar Makes the Difference
Manav Suthar was at the centre of India’s success on the final day. With Sri Lanka still hoping to stay in the contest, Suthar delivered a decisive spell during the 75th over and quickly changed the course of the match.
He dismissed Sonal Dinusha, Prabath Jayasuriya and Lahiru Kumara in the same crucial phase, putting Sri Lanka under immense pressure. Those wickets effectively ended the hosts’ hopes of completing what would have been a challenging fourth-innings chase.
Suthar’s overall contribution was equally impressive. After taking four wickets in Sri Lanka’s first innings, he added another five in the second innings. His nine-wicket match haul proved to be one of the biggest reasons behind India’s 165-run victory.
Sonal Dinusha and Dhananjaya de Silva Fight Hard
Sri Lanka did not surrender without a fight. Sonal Dinusha played an important innings of 84 runs from 128 deliveries and kept the Indian bowlers busy for a considerable period. However, his effort was not enough to take Sri Lanka anywhere close to the target.
Captain Dhananjaya de Silva also made a valuable contribution, scoring 59 runs. His wicket was another major turning point for India. Ravindra Jadeja took the catch off Manav Suthar’s bowling to remove the Sri Lankan captain and put India firmly in control.
Niroshan Dickwella was another important wicket for India, with fast bowler Prasidh Krishna dismissing him for 10 runs.
Sri Lanka Lose Momentum After a Positive Start
Sri Lanka began the final day with some hope of extending the contest. During the first session, the hosts scored 91 runs from 33 overs. However, India’s bowlers kept applying pressure and refused to allow the Sri Lankan batters to settle.
Once the wickets began to fall regularly, Sri Lanka’s chase quickly lost momentum. India continued to attack and eventually dismissed the entire Sri Lankan batting lineup for 206 runs in 77.4 overs.
The result gave India a convincing 165-run victory and a valuable 1-0 advantage in the two-match Test series.

India Take Important Lead in Two-Match Series
