IND VS IRE 1st T20: Ireland Stun India by 34 Runs in Belfast to Register Historic First International Victory

Ireland Make History with Memorable Win Over India

The IND VS IRE 1st T20 produced one of the biggest surprises in recent meetings between the two sides as Ireland defeated India by 34 runs in Belfast to claim their first-ever international victory over the Men in Blue.

Chasing a challenging target of 183, India were bowled out for 148 in 18.5 overs despite a blistering half-century from Abhishek Sharma. Ireland’s disciplined bowling attack capitalized on India’s early collapse and never allowed the visitors to recover.

The result marked a landmark moment for Irish cricket, ending India’s unbeaten record against Ireland in T20 internationals.

Early Wickets Leave India Under Pressure

India’s chase got off to the worst possible start as the top order failed to handle the new ball. Opener Sanju Samson was dismissed for just five runs after being bowled by debutant Jay Mundra.

The problems continued almost immediately. Ishan Kishan managed only one run before falling to another debutant, fast bowler Matthew Hollard. Captain Shreyas Iyer’s first outing as India’s full-time T20 skipper also ended in disappointment as he departed for just three runs.

With three key wickets lost inside the first 20 runs, India found themselves in deep trouble and spent the remainder of the innings trying to rebuild.

Abhishek Sharma Fights Back with Explosive Fifty

Amid the collapse, Abhishek Sharma provided the only major resistance. The left-handed opener attacked the Irish bowlers from the outset and made full use of the powerplay.

He raced to his half-century in just 19 deliveries, hitting boundaries all around the ground. By the end of the powerplay, India had reached 68 runs, with Abhishek contributing 47 of those runs.

His innings ended immediately after reaching the milestone when Liam McCarthy dismissed him. Abhishek’s entertaining knock of 50 came from only 20 balls and included seven fours and two sixes.

His dismissal proved to be the turning point as India’s hopes faded quickly afterward.

Ireland’s Bowlers Finish the Job

Following Abhishek’s departure, India’s middle order failed to build meaningful partnerships.

Tilak Varma scored 19, while Washington Sundar managed only nine as wickets continued to fall at regular intervals. At one stage, India had slipped to 100 for six, leaving the lower order with too much work to do.

Shivam Dube attempted to revive the chase with a fighting 25, while Axar Patel added 15. The pair stitched together a 35-run partnership for the seventh wicket, briefly raising hopes of an unlikely comeback.

However, Jay Mundra dismissed Dube with a caught-and-bowled effort, effectively ending India’s challenge. Ireland wrapped up the remaining wickets to seal a famous victory.

Lorcan Tucker Leads Ireland to Competitive Total

Earlier in the evening, Ireland recovered well after losing the toss and being asked to bat first.

India made an encouraging start with the ball. Harshit Rana struck early to remove Ross Adair and Tim Tector, while Arshdeep Singh dismissed Harry Tector without scoring.

Despite the early setbacks, Ireland rebuilt their innings through captain Lorcan Tucker and Gareth Delany. Tucker anchored the innings with a composed 50 from 36 balls, while Delany narrowly missed his half-century, scoring an aggressive 49 off 32 deliveries.

Their partnership helped Ireland post a competitive total of 182 for nine in the allotted 20 overs, giving the bowlers enough runs to defend.

Shreyas Iyer’s Captaincy Begins with Defeat

The match also marked the beginning of a new chapter for India’s T20 side under captain Shreyas Iyer following the team’s successful ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign.

However, the new-look Indian side struggled to deliver with the bat, and the captain’s first match in charge ended in defeat. The batting lineup never recovered after the early collapse, allowing Ireland to seize complete control of the contest.

Ireland Break India’s Winning Streak

Before this encounter, India had won all eight previous T20 internationals against Ireland. The victory in Belfast therefore represents Ireland’s first international win over India in any format, making it one of the most significant results in the country’s cricket history.

The match also attracted attention because 15-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was not included in India’s playing XI. His much-anticipated international debut will now have to wait for another opportunity later in the series.

Ireland’s memorable triumph has not only given them a 1-0 lead in the series but has also demonstrated the growing competitiveness of Associate and emerging cricket nations on the international stage.
