Usman Tariq Defends Bowling Action After Recent Incident in The Hundred
The latest controversy surrounding Tariq occurred during The Hundred in England, where he is playing for Birmingham Phoenix. During a match against Trent Rockets, the Pakistani spinner dismissed Australian batter Tim David with a catch.
After being given out, David made a gesture that appeared to suggest a no-ball, leading many to believe he was questioning Tariq’s bowling action. The incident quickly drew attention, adding to the ongoing discussions surrounding the spinner’s unusual bowling style.
Reacting to the episode, Tariq expressed frustration over players repeatedly raising concerns after losing their wicket. He believes such reactions are unnecessary because trained officials are already responsible for monitoring bowling actions throughout a match.
Says Umpires and Match Referees Are the Right Authorities
Speaking about the issue, Tariq made it clear that batters should not be deciding whether a bowling action is legal.
He pointed out that umpires and match referees are present specifically to ensure every delivery follows the rules. Since he has been cleared to bowl during matches, Tariq believes there should be no further questions about his action.
The spinner also suggested that cricket authorities may need to step in when players repeatedly challenge bowlers through on-field gestures or public comments after being dismissed.
Similar Concerns Were Raised Earlier
This is not the first time Tariq has faced such situations on the cricket field.
He recalled an incident during the International League T20 in Dubai when England batter Tom Banton questioned his bowling action after being dismissed. Tariq said he responded directly to Banton at the time and explained his position.
More recently, Australian all-rounder Cameron Green also raised concerns during a T20 International earlier this year, continuing a pattern of questions from opposition players regarding Tariq’s bowling style.
Despite these incidents, Tariq maintains that all necessary assessments have already been completed by the game’s governing authorities.
Ravichandran Ashwin Previously Backed Tariq
Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has previously defended Tariq against criticism.
Ashwin explained that although Tariq‘s bowling action looks unusual because of the pause in his delivery stride, it does not automatically mean it violates cricket’s regulations. According to the experienced Indian spinner, an unconventional bowling style should not be confused with an illegal action unless official testing proves otherwise.
Ashwin’s comments added credibility to Tariq’s stance, especially given the veteran spinner’s deep understanding of bowling mechanics and cricket laws.
Cleared After ICC Assessment Following PSL Report
Earlier this year, Tariq’s bowling action came under official scrutiny during the Pakistan Super League (PSL), where he was reported for a suspected illegal bowling action.
As per ICC regulations, his action underwent a formal biomechanical assessment. After completing the testing process, Tariq received clearance, confirming that his bowling action fell within the legal limits prescribed under the Laws of Cricket.
The clearance effectively settled the official review, allowing him to continue bowling in domestic and international competitions.
T20 Cricket Leaves Little Room for Spin Bowlers
Tariq also highlighted the challenges modern spin bowlers face in T20 cricket.
He said today’s shortest format heavily favors aggressive batting, forcing spinners to constantly develop new variations to remain effective. According to him, creating different deliveries requires extensive practice and complete concentration during every match.
He believes the increasing pressure on spin bowlers makes it even more important for players to focus on improving their skills rather than defending themselves against repeated accusations.
