During his innings, he completed 100 sixes in T20 International cricket, becoming the fastest batter in history to achieve the landmark in terms of balls faced. He reached the milestone in 785 deliveries, surpassing the previous record held by West Indies batter Evin Lewis.
The achievement also placed him among a select group of Indian cricketers with 100 or more T20I sixes, joining the likes of Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya and Virat Kohli.
It marked another significant moment in the young opener’s rapidly growing international career.
Captain Shreyas Iyer Leads from the Front
While Abhishek dominated with attacking cricket, captain Shreyas Iyer played the anchor’s role before accelerating during the middle overs.
Leading India for the first time in a T20 International as captain, Iyer displayed maturity and composure after the early collapse. He rotated the strike effectively, punished loose deliveries and gradually increased his scoring rate as the innings progressed.
The right-hander reached his half-century in 38 balls before shifting gears during the closing overs.
His innings finally ended at 68 runs from 47 balls, featuring six boundaries and one six, making it his maiden T20I fifty as India’s captain.
Together, Iyer and Abhishek stitched together a crucial 82-run partnership for the third wicket, rescuing India from a difficult position.
England Fight Back Through Saqib Mahmood
England responded well after the partnership threatened to take the game away from them.
Fast bowler Saqib Mahmood delivered an outstanding spell, dismissing both Indian openers early before returning later to remove Shreyas Iyer and Tilak Varma.
Tilak Varma scored 13 runs before miscues against a full toss resulted in a simple catch at short fine leg.
Mahmood finished as England’s most successful bowler with three wickets, providing timely breakthroughs throughout the innings.
Sam Curran also contributed by trapping Abhishek Sharma leg before wicket after England successfully overturned the on-field decision through DRS.
DRS Plays an Important Role
Technology influenced several key moments during the innings.
England successfully reviewed the umpire’s decision to dismiss Abhishek Sharma, with ball tracking confirming the delivery would have struck leg stump.
However, the hosts were unsuccessful on another review involving Tilak Varma. England appealed for LBW after the batter attempted a reverse sweep, but replays confirmed the ball had first brushed his gloves, allowing him to continue while England lost one of their reviews.
Shivam Dube Provides Late Acceleration
India received another valuable contribution in the final overs from Shivam Dube, who played an unbeaten cameo that lifted the visitors close to the 190-run mark.
Dube attacked both the pacers and spinners with clean hitting, scoring 42 not out from just 21 balls. His innings included two fours and three sixes, ensuring India maintained momentum after the dismissal of Shreyas Iyer.
Although Harshit Rana departed without scoring and Axar Patel was run out off the final delivery while attempting a second run, Dube’s late assault ensured India finished strongly.
India eventually closed their innings on 189 for 7 in 20 overs, setting England a challenging target.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi Wait Continues
One of the talking points before the match was whether teenage sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi would receive his international debut.
However, the 15-year-old once again remained on the sidelines as India retained their preferred playing combination for the opening match of the series.
His wait for a maiden international appearance therefore continues despite growing excitement surrounding his potential.
