The latest T20I rankings released by the International Cricket Council (ICC) have brought significant changes at the top of the men’s batting chart, with India’s Ishan Kishan climbing to the No. 1 position for the first time in his career. The wicketkeeper-batter has overtaken teammate Abhishek Sharma to become the world’s highest-ranked T20I batter, marking a remarkable turnaround after returning to international cricket earlier this year.
Kishan now holds 876 rating points, edging past Abhishek Sharma, who slips to second place with 869 points. The rankings update reflects the consistency Kishan has shown since making his comeback, despite a relatively quiet outing in India’s recent T20I series against Ireland.
Ishan Kishan Completes Remarkable Comeback
Ishan Kishan’s rise to the top of the T20I rankings is one of the biggest success stories of the year. After spending nearly two years out of the Indian national team, the left-handed batter returned to international cricket in January and quickly rediscovered his form.
His performances across multiple series earned him valuable rating points, allowing him to overtake Abhishek Sharma, who had occupied the No. 1 spot for almost a year. Kishan’s ascent highlights the ICC ranking system’s emphasis on sustained performances over time rather than a single series.
Although he managed scores of just 1 and 12 during India’s disappointing tour of Ireland, his earlier contributions were enough to keep him ahead in the latest rankings.
Abhishek Sharma Drops to Second
Abhishek Sharma, who had enjoyed an extended stay at the top of the batting rankings, now moves down one position. The Indian opener scored a fluent 49 runs in the opening T20I against Ireland but failed to build on that effort in the second match, where he was dismissed for a golden duck.
India suffered a surprising 2-0 series defeat to Ireland, a result that also influenced the latest T20I rankings. While Abhishek remains among the world’s elite batters, Kishan’s overall consistency proved decisive in the latest update.
