West Indies seal the three-match series with one game remaining after another commanding all-round performance
The west indies vs ireland ODI series was decided with a match to spare after West Indies produced another dominant display to defeat Ireland by six wickets in the second One-Day International at Bready. Chasing a target of 242, the visitors reached the total comfortably with 11.1 overs remaining, taking an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.
Captain Hayley Matthews and veteran batter Stafanie Taylor starred with unbeaten and match-defining centuries, continuing West Indies’ impressive form after their convincing victory in the opening ODI.
Ireland Post a Competitive Total After Mid-Innings Recovery
After winning the toss, West Indies chose to bowl first and made an encouraging start by putting pressure on Ireland’s top order.
Ireland openers Sarah Forbes and Gaby Lewis built a cautious opening partnership worth 38 runs before Deandra Dottin provided the breakthrough. Forbes edged behind to wicketkeeper Shemaine Campbelle shortly before the end of the powerplay, and Dottin struck again in her following over by dismissing Amy Hunter, who also edged to the keeper.
Despite losing early wickets, Ireland recovered well through a valuable partnership between Amy Hunter and Rebecca Stokell. The pair added 106 runs, stabilising the innings after the early setbacks and giving the hosts hope of posting a challenging total.
Hunter played an impressive knock of 67, while Stokell contributed a composed 57. Their partnership frustrated the West Indies bowlers before leg-spinner Afy Fletcher finally broke the stand by dismissing Stokell in the 41st over.
Soon after, Matthews removed Hunter to leave Ireland slipping from a promising position at 180 for 3 to 188 for 5.
Late contributions from Leah Paul, who scored 32, and Alana Dalzell’s unbeaten 17 helped Ireland finish strongly. Their efforts lifted the total to 241 for 7, giving the home side a competitive score on a batting-friendly surface.
Matthews and Taylor Take Complete Control of the Chase
West Indies’ chase suffered an early setback when opening batter Zaida James Grimmond was dismissed in the opening over by Orla Prendergast.
However, that proved to be Ireland’s only significant success for much of the innings.
Hayley Matthews joined experienced batter Stafanie Taylor at the crease, and together they completely shifted the momentum of the match. The pair built an outstanding 158-run partnership for the second wicket, batting with confidence and rotating the strike effectively while punishing loose deliveries.
Matthews continued the remarkable form she displayed in the opening ODI, where she had already produced a record-breaking unbeaten 159 during the chase. This time, she reached another century in just 92 deliveries, striking 14 boundaries and two sixes before eventually being dismissed for exactly 100.
Her innings once again highlighted why she remains one of the most influential all-rounders in women’s cricket.
Taylor Completes a Well-Deserved Century
Although Matthews departed after reaching her hundred, Taylor ensured there would be no late drama.
Ireland spinner Aimee Maguire briefly raised hopes by dismissing Deandra Dottin and Jannillea Glasgow in successive deliveries. Even then, West Indies required only 43 runs with more than 15 overs remaining, leaving the result virtually beyond doubt.
Taylor remained calm throughout the closing stages and completed her century from 104 balls in trademark fashion, first finding the boundary before clearing it for six to move into three figures.
Moments later, Ireland’s Alana Dalzell delivered a no-ball while West Indies needed just one run to win, allowing the visitors to secure victory and seal the series without facing another legal delivery.
Taylor finished unbeaten on 100, anchoring the successful chase with an innings built on patience, experience and precise stroke play.
Matthews Continues Outstanding All-Round Form
The second ODI further underlined Hayley Matthews’ importance to the West Indies side. Along with scoring another century, she also made valuable contributions with the ball by claiming key wickets during Ireland’s innings.
Across the opening two matches of the series, Matthews has consistently influenced games with both bat and ball, strengthening her reputation as one of the leading all-round cricketers in the international women’s game.
Her partnership with Taylor also showcased the depth and experience within the West Indies batting order, allowing the team to chase down another target with minimal pressure.
West Indies Eye a Series Sweep
With the series already secured, West Indies will now look to complete a clean sweep when the third and final ODI takes place at the same venue in Bready.
Ireland, meanwhile, will aim to end the series on a positive note after showing encouraging signs through individual performances from Amy Hunter, Rebecca Stokell and Leah Paul. However, they will need a stronger bowling display and earlier breakthroughs to challenge a confident West Indies side.
After two comprehensive victories, West Indies have firmly established themselves as the stronger team in the west indies vs ireland series, combining disciplined bowling with dominant batting performances to secure the ODI series before the final match.
