Zim vs Ban T20 began with a dominant display from Zimbabwe’s fast bowlers as Richard Ngarava and Blessing Muzarabani dismantled Bangladesh’s batting line-up to secure a convincing 32-run victory in the opening match of the three-match T20I series in Bulawayo.
After posting a competitive total of 170 for 6, Zimbabwe relied on their experienced pace attack to defend the target successfully. Ngarava and Muzarabani claimed four wickets each, combining for eight dismissals as Bangladesh were bowled out for 138 with one over remaining. The result gives Zimbabwe a 1-0 lead in the series and continues their impressive run of performances in home conditions.
Zimbabwe Recover Well to Post Competitive Total
Zimbabwe’s innings began positively thanks to an aggressive start from opener Brian Bennett, who looked confident from the outset after a disappointing ODI series. Bennett attacked Bangladesh’s new-ball bowlers with a mix of crisp drives, pulls and innovative strokes, helping Zimbabwe establish early momentum.
The right-hander scored 44 runs from just 30 deliveries, striking boundaries regularly during the powerplay and ensuring the hosts maintained a healthy scoring rate. His innings included several well-timed fours and a towering six over long-on that highlighted his aggressive intent.
However, Bangladesh gradually regained control through disciplined pace bowling. Their bowlers slowed Zimbabwe’s progress during the middle overs, reducing the hosts to 116 for 4 and putting pressure on the lower middle order.
Fast bowler Nahid Rana was particularly effective, using his pace and accuracy to break important partnerships. His spell of 4 for 26 kept Bangladesh firmly in the contest, while senior seamer Taskin Ahmed also impressed by conceding only 22 runs in his four overs.
Despite losing wickets at regular intervals, Zimbabwe found valuable contributions late in the innings. Ryan Burl played a composed knock of 30 from 25 balls, while Brad Evans added a quick unbeaten 19 from just 10 deliveries. Their late acceleration helped Zimbabwe push the total to 170, giving their bowlers a competitive score to defend.
Bangladesh’s Chase Falls Apart Against Zimbabwe’s Fast Bowlers
Although the target was within reach, Bangladesh struggled almost immediately against Zimbabwe’s pace attack.
Richard Ngarava struck early by using extra bounce to trouble the top order. His short-pitched deliveries forced mistakes from Bangladesh’s openers, while Blessing Muzarabani maintained relentless pressure with accurate seam bowling.
Within the opening overs, Bangladesh had slipped to 34 for 3, leaving the visitors chasing the game. The early breakthroughs significantly increased the required run rate and placed enormous pressure on the middle order.
Zimbabwe’s bowlers consistently extracted bounce from a surface that was not expected to offer much assistance to fast bowling. Their disciplined lines and ability to hit hard lengths prevented Bangladesh’s batters from building meaningful partnerships.
As the innings progressed, Zimbabwe tightened their grip further. Muzarabani and Ngarava returned during the closing overs to remove the remaining batters, triggering a dramatic collapse in which Bangladesh lost five wickets for just eight runs in a brief spell.
Bangladesh were eventually dismissed for 138, handing Zimbabwe a deserved 32-run victory.
Muzarabani Produces Another Outstanding Spell
Blessing Muzarabani once again demonstrated why he remains Zimbabwe’s most dangerous fast bowler in the shortest format.
He finished with outstanding figures of 4 for 17, matching the best bowling performance of his T20 International career. His spell featured excellent control, consistent bounce and smart variations that repeatedly troubled Bangladesh’s batters.
Muzarabani removed key middle-order players at crucial stages of the chase, ensuring Bangladesh never gained the momentum required to threaten Zimbabwe’s total.
His performance also continued the impressive form he has shown in international cricket, providing Zimbabwe with an experienced match-winner capable of changing games with both the new ball and at the death.
Richard Ngarava Provides the Perfect Support
While Muzarabani claimed the headlines, Richard Ngarava was equally influential.
The left-arm fast bowler ended with figures of 4 for 26 after producing an excellent opening spell. He used short-pitched deliveries effectively, forcing Bangladesh’s batters into uncomfortable shots and creating constant pressure during the powerplay.
Together, Ngarava and Muzarabani bowled 29 dot balls, a statistic that underlined their control throughout the innings. Their ability to deny scoring opportunities proved just as important as the wickets they collected.
The experienced pace combination ensured Zimbabwe maintained complete control from the start of Bangladesh’s chase until the final wicket.
Nahid Rana Emerges as Bangladesh’s Bright Spot
Despite Bangladesh’s defeat, fast bowler Nahid Rana delivered one of the standout performances of the match.
Introduced early into the attack, Rana immediately slowed Zimbabwe’s scoring with sharp pace and disciplined bowling. He dismissed Tadiwanashe Marumani before later removing Brian Bennett, preventing Zimbabwe from building larger partnerships.
His best spell came near the end of the innings when he claimed multiple wickets in quick succession, briefly threatening a hat-trick and finishing with impressive figures of 4 for 26.
Although Zimbabwe managed to score valuable runs in the final over, Rana’s overall performance offered Bangladesh plenty of positives ahead of the remaining matches.
Yasir Ali Marks International Return with Fighting Fifty
Bangladesh found one encouraging performance with the bat through Yasir Ali, who was playing his first T20 International after a lengthy absence from the national side.
Coming to the crease during the powerplay, Yasir initially assessed the conditions before gradually increasing his scoring rate. He played several attractive strokes against both pace and spin, including powerful sixes over midwicket and deep cover.
His half-century came from only 33 deliveries and represented his maiden T20I fifty for Bangladesh.
However, Yasir received little support from the rest of the batting order. No other Bangladesh batter managed to cross 20 runs, making it difficult for the visitors to keep pace with the required scoring rate.
His innings ultimately stood as a lone bright spot in an otherwise disappointing batting performance.
Zimbabwe Take Early Control of the Series
The opening Zim vs Ban T20 showcased Zimbabwe’s growing confidence in home conditions, particularly through the quality of their pace attack.
After recovering from a mid-innings slowdown to post a competitive total, the hosts executed their bowling plans with precision. Their fast bowlers consistently exploited bounce, maintained disciplined lines and never allowed Bangladesh to establish momentum during the chase.
For Bangladesh, the defeat exposed familiar batting concerns despite encouraging performances from Nahid Rana and Yasir Ali. The visitors will now need a stronger collective effort if they hope to level the series in the second T20I.
Zimbabwe, meanwhile, will enter the next match full of confidence, knowing another victory would secure the series against a Bangladesh side searching for answers after an underwhelming start.
