Jos Buttler added another remarkable chapter to his career during the fifth and final T20I against India at the Rose Bowl in Southampton, breaking multiple records with a sensational century. The experienced wicketkeeper-batter became England’s highest run-scorer in men’s T20 cricket and also surpassed former India captain MS Dhoni in an elite international record.
The milestone performance highlighted Buttler’s consistency and influence in the shortest format, reinforcing his status as one of England’s greatest white-ball cricketers.
Jos Buttler Overtakes Alex Hales in England’s T20 Run Charts
Buttler reached the landmark after scoring his 25th run of the innings, moving past former England opener Alex Hales to become the country’s leading run-getter across all men’s T20 matches.
The achievement came during an outstanding innings in which Buttler anchored England’s batting before accelerating in trademark fashion. His latest knock took his overall T20 tally beyond 14,450 runs from more than 500 matches, placing him at the top of England’s all-time T20 scoring list.
Hales, who previously held the record, remains close behind with more than 14,400 runs, while James Vince, Jason Roy, and Dawid Malan are among the other English batters to have crossed the 10,000-run mark in T20 cricket.
England’s Most Successful T20I Batter
Buttler has already established himself as England’s most prolific batter in T20 Internationals. He remains the only English player to score more than 2,500 runs in T20Is and has now accumulated over 4,100 runs in 160 international appearances.
His record stands out not only for the volume of runs but also for the speed at which they have been scored. With a strike rate above 147, Buttler owns one of the best scoring rates among international batters with more than 3,500 T20I runs.
Throughout his international T20 career, he has combined reliability with explosive stroke play, producing one century and nearly 30 half-centuries while frequently opening or finishing innings for England.
Century Ends Long Wait
The Southampton innings also ended a lengthy wait for a T20 International hundred. After reaching his first fifty in 19 innings, Buttler converted the start into a commanding century, reaching the three-figure mark from just 51 deliveries.
It was his first T20I hundred since November 2021, when he scored an unbeaten 101 against Sri Lanka during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates.
Batting with complete authority, Buttler maintained a strike rate well above 190 for most of the innings, punishing both pace and spin while keeping England in complete control.
Record Partnership With Harry Brook
Buttler’s memorable knock was supported brilliantly by England captain Harry Brook. The pair combined for a record-breaking stand that became England’s highest partnership in T20 International history.
Their partnership surpassed the previous national record of 182 runs set by Dawid Malan and former captain Eoin Morgan against New Zealand in Napier in 2019. The new benchmark reflected England’s aggressive batting approach and provided the platform for a formidable total.
Buttler Surpasses MS Dhoni in Six-Hitting Record
The match also brought another significant personal achievement. Buttler moved ahead of former India captain MS Dhoni for the most international sixes by a wicketkeeper.
The record underlines Buttler’s impact as one of the most destructive wicketkeeper-batters the game has produced. Across all T20 cricket, he has now struck more than 600 sixes, with a substantial number of them coming in international matches.
He also holds the record for the most T20 centuries by an England batter, further illustrating his remarkable longevity and ability to dominate attacks across franchise and international cricket.
A Landmark Day for England’s White-Ball Star
Jos Buttler‘s performance in Southampton was about much more than a century. It was a display that rewrote England’s record books and added another milestone to an already distinguished career.
By becoming England’s leading T20 run-scorer, setting a new record partnership, ending his wait for an international hundred, and moving past MS Dhoni in the list of wicketkeepers with the most international sixes, Buttler once again demonstrated why he remains one of the finest T20 players of his generation.
As England continue to build towards future global tournaments, Buttler’s experience, consistency, and match-winning ability remain central to the team’s ambitions in white-ball cricket.
